Each “Foto Friday” 2dopesistahs pay homage to our love of Pinterest by remixing one of the posts we saw there, the “30 Day Photo Challenge,” originally posted on the Little Bennet blog. We are presenting our photographs so that we can explore the power of the camera and how we see the world.
Day 5: After Dark
So, last week Da Realist 1 was holding the blog down while I was in Washington, DC, participating in the 51st Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It was an amazing experience to see the entire city in red during our celebration of 100 years of our beloved sorority.
While there, I made the pilgrimage back home to Howard University, where 22 courageous women chose to embark upon a journey of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. In the picture above is Fortitude and I am pictured below with her. The place where I stood was illuminated and circling Fortitude were 22 plots, each with the name of a Founder.
What I love about Fortitude is how she has one hand reaching up and forward, reminding me of the possibilities of the future. It represents hope and the desire to create better circumstances for her/our communities. And, Fortitude has her other hand reaching back to bring others with her. She recognizes that she can’t go alone.
Dictionary.com defines fortitude as strength and firmness of mind; resolute endurance. Every once in a while, I think about what she represents and I allow her to inspire me to work for better social and political circumstances for my community.
