Wacky Wednesday: Favorite Movie Lines

From My Big Fat Greek Wedding, 2002

Toula: Ian is a vegetarian. He doesn’t eat meat.
Aunt Voula: He don’t eat no meat?
Toula: No, he doesn’t eat meat.
Aunt Voula: WHAT YOU MEAN HE DON’T EAT NO MEAT? (silence, as everyone looks shocked)
Aunt Voula: Oh that’s ok. That’s ok; I make lamb.

I love this movie because of Toula’s crazy, over-the-top family. If you replace “meat” with “pork,” a similar conversation probably happened in my family. I am from the “Dirty-Dirty,” and my mother was quite confused by my husband not eating pork. She explained that when she made collard greens, he could just pick out the hamhock if he didn’t want to eat it. Then, I had to explain that he neither ate pork nor pork-flavored foods.

Love JonesFrom Love Jones, 1997

Nina Mosley: You always want what you want when you want it. Why is everything so urgent with you?

Darrius Lovehall: Let me tell you somethin’. This here, right now, at this very moment, is all that matters to me. I love you. That’s urgent like a motherf*ck*r.

In 1997, Larenz Tate transformed himself from the dorky kid in The Inkwell to the guy that so many black women wanted to be with in Love Jones. I fell in love with his character’s poetic style, but most of all, I fell in love with Tate and Nia Long as a couple. They were convincing, charismatic, and they were characters my girlfriends and I could identify with. And, Tate was the man we all wanted to be with.

So, 2 Dope readers, what’s your favorite movie line?

  1. I quote both of these movies often. My favorite line in My Big Fat Greek Wedding is when Toula is talking to her mom about her dad’s stubborness and the mother responds, “the man is the head of the house, but the woman, the woman is the neck and can turn the head any way she wants…” @dahype1 you know I just quoted that line to You know Who when explaining that when you love someone, truly love someone there is a sense of urgency. I told him that he didn’t love me because there was no sense of urgency for him…

    • For the record, the moment that he told her that the two of them, being together, was urgent, was the sexiest thing he could have ever said to her. He performed poetry and had a number of beautiful lines throughout the movie, but his commitment to their relationship in that moment was so damned sexy to me!!! One day, Lauren R., “Can’t-Get-Right” will get right and understand that.

      • I can’t hang with y’all on “Love Jones”! You clearly know that movie much better than I do. 🙂

      • Someone is quickly tryng to move into Can’t Get Right’s place…he’d better watch out before I feel a sense of urgency for someone else…

      • And yes, him saying that to her was by far the sexiest moment in that entire movie. I hold it up there with Dwayne Waynes, “Please, baby please…” at Whitley’s wedding to Byron. Clearly I need to get a life!!!!

  2. Tate and Long were a modern day Williams and Ross from Mahogany. My favorite line…” success is nothing without someone you love to share it with”. Priceless!

    • Hope, I have not seen that movie in so long! Now you are going to make me buy THAT one. Wow! That is such a good point . . . that was the precursor to Love Jones. I love Mahogany.

      • Oh, snap! I remember that line from “Mahogany.” Billy Dee Williams was the man back in the day.

  3. Macho Man Randy Savage: HEY FREAKSHOW!!!.. Your goinging nowhere, I gotcha for THREE MINUTES!! What movie was that line from?
